Bees are often seen as gentle and peace-loving honey gatherers. However, when their lives are endangered or their habitat is disturbed, they will not hesitate to fight back with their stingers. If you live around areas where bees may thrive, please equip yourself with survival knowledge on how to handle bee stings.

Never judge a bee by its size! Though most of their species are small, their stingers can tear your flesh and induce irritation, paralysis, and even poisoning. Time for a short lesson in medical care. Here are the first few things that you should do after a bee has stung you:

  1. Identify the type of bee
Each bee family can inflict a different level of pain and toxicity. Some even may release pheromones that cause their companions to attack you altogether. So that you can intelligently decide on how to handle a specific bee sting, it is advantageous to ascertain as soon as possible what kind of bee had inflicted the injury.
  2. Detach the stinger from the wound area
Never let a stinger stay on your skin for so long. Aside from the earth splitting pain that you can experience, the said bee part can contain chemicals that can worsen your condition. Removing the stinger is relatively easy. You can use any clean and blunt object; an identification card would be a good example.
  3. Use safe methods for reducing pain
Most bee stings are not life-threatening. However, they can leave you bawling because of the pain. So that you may acquire immediate relief, there are two things that you can do. First, you may compress an ice bag over the wound area for a few minutes. Also, you can take an OTC pain reliever to suppress the lingering sensation.
  4. Take an appropriate dosage of antihistamine
Some people may develop allergic reactions to bee stings. If you notice symptoms like rashes, swelling, and dizziness, it is best to pop a single pill of antihistamine. After which, try to collect yourself and neutralize your adrenaline.
  5. Call for medical help
Are the bruises in the wound area becoming more severe? Is blood still profusely gushing out? If these alarming things occur, please seek for medical attention right away. Something must have happened to trigger a deeper complication.
