Telling the Difference: Strep Throat and the Flu

Telling the Difference: Strep Throat and the Flu

If you are experiencing a headache, sore throat, and fever, is it strep throat or the flu? These two illnesses may have some similar symptoms, but they are very different. Because of these differences, they are to be treated differently and separately. You can easily find a family doctor accepting new patients in Cambridge if you need treatment.

The Differences

Although strep throat and the flu can both cause a fever, chills, sore throat, muscle aches, and even chills, they both differ in causes and other symptoms. Firstline Walk-In Clinic, Family Practice & Pharmacy is here to help you distinguish between the two.

  • Strep throat is a bacterial infection, which may make you experience a sore throat that makes it difficult for you to eat since swallowing becomes a painful ordeal. Other symptoms of strep include nausea, vomiting, rash, red, sore throat with white patches, swollen and sore glands in the neck, and swelling in the back of the mouth.
  • The flu, on the other hand, is a viral infection that affects the nose, throat, and lungs. The symptoms that distinguish the flu from strep are runny or stuffy nose and diarrhea. You can make the illness more bearable by purchasing some OTCs from our pharmacy in Cambridge.

However, for your safety as well as those around you, we advise you to seek medical care in Ontario.

Even for experts, telling one from the other can be hard. So when in doubt, visit our walk-in clinic in Cambridge for a check-up. Getting your vaccines updated will also save you a lot of headaches in the future, so get those done while you’re here.
