What Are the Complications of Alcohol Addiction

Alcohol is one of those substances that are often abused by people, regardless of race or gender. But why is alcohol so addictive? Why do people continue to consume alcohol even though many alcoholics have already sought medical care in Ontario to take care of its physical complications?

One reason is the biochemical reaction that alcohol triggers in the body. When ingested, the brain receives signals to produce dopamine and endorphins. These two chemicals are responsible for making a person feel good, which results in a “high” that could get people addicted to the substance.

Ask any doctor at any walk-in clinic in Cambridge why a person is driven to drink, and you’ll find stress as their most common answer. True enough, today’s fast-moving world can be very stressful, which alcoholics try to find solace by imbibing.

Unfortunately, alcohol addiction has several undesirable side effects, which include:

  • Liver problems
The liver tries to filter out the harmful chemicals in alcohol and ends up getting damaged along the way. This can lead to multiple sclerosis and liver disease. This is why alcohol should not be consumed with medicines you bought from a pharmacy in Cambridge.
  • Gastrointestinal problems
Serious liver problems can lead to a condition called Mallory-Weiss tears, which results in heavy stomach bleeding.
  • Social complications
Alcohol consumption can lead to aggressive behavior and other undesirable acts. This can alienate alcoholics from their friends and colleagues.

Alcohol addiction can be addressed through therapy, but it would require a conscious effort from the alcoholic to change for the better.

In addition to providing pharmaceutical services in Ontario, Firstline Walk-In Clinic, Family Practice & Pharmacy also provides intervention for alcoholism and other forms of addiction.
